About this course
Graphic design plays a significant role not only in the way we present text and images but also in the way that we understand and navigate through space. At the same time, it provides much of the aesthetic character used to enhance spatial experiences through the design of forms and patterns deployed on both 2D surfaces and 3D objects.
Learning from industry professionals across graphic design, interaction design, and spatial design, students will explore the range of ways in which we use graphic design to enhance our experiences within interiors online and their application to surfaces and objects.
As students progress through the course, building self-confidence and a deeper understanding of graphic and spatial design, they will explore how design is a tool of social change and ethical innovation, challenging our understanding of how we define, express and explore our physical and virtual realities.
Modules
Year 1 (Level 4)
The first year focuses on building an awareness of the basic principles of graphic design, including print, digital and online. In addition to developing an awareness of the design process, students will begin to explore the theories associated with graphic and spatial design (through Contextual Studies) that will inform their design projects. Through Professional Practice, students will begin their journey to understand the industry and their future planning for employment.
-Principles of Graphic Design, Surface and Space
-Contextual Studies 1
-Principles of Design and Interaction
-Principles of Typography & Text
-Professional Practice 1
Year 2 (Level 5)
The second year moves students to more complex projects, exploring greater integration of graphic design into the spaces and objects that create our interior experiences. Students will undertake projects that are specifically associated with surface design for upholstery, wallpaper, flooring, and other decorative products. In addition, principles of wayfinding (the ways in which we understand how to navigate space) through projects set in both physical and virtual space.
-Advanced Graphic Design, Surface and Space
-Contextual Studies 2
-Wayfinding for Physical and Virtual Space
-Surface Design for Spatial Products
Year 3 (Level 6)
By the final year of the degree, students will have a strong understanding of the subject and will be working on a Major Project and Dissertation related to a topic of their own choosing, linking theory and practice through these different forms of research and design. As they prepare for the next step, after completing the course, the Professional Practice curriculum focuses on a deep understanding of different roles within the sector and identifying individual plans for employment and personal professional development.
-Major Project
-Contextual Studies 3 (Dissertation)
-Professional Practice 3

This information comes from the National Student Survey, an annual student survey of final-year students. You can use this to see how satisfied students studying this subject area at this university, are (not the individual course).
This is the percentage of final-year students at this university who were "definitely" or "mostly" satisfied with their course. We've analysed this figure against other universities so you can see whether this is high, medium or low.

You can use this to get an idea of who you might share a lecture with and how they progressed in this subject, here. It's also worth comparing typical A-level subjects and grades students achieved with the current course entry requirements; similarities or differences here could indicate how flexible (or not) a university might be.

Post-six month graduation stats:
This is from the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education Survey, based on responses from graduates who studied the same subject area here.
It offers a snapshot of what grads went on to do six months later, what they were earning on average, and whether they felt their degree helped them obtain a 'graduate role'. We calculate a mean rating to indicate if this is high, medium or low compared to other universities.

The Longitudinal Educational Outcomes dataset combines HRMC earnings data with student records from the Higher Education Statistics Agency.
While there are lots of factors at play when it comes to your future earnings, use this as a rough timeline of what graduates in this subject area were earning on average one, three and five years later. Can you see a steady increase in salary, or did grads need some experience under their belt before seeing a nice bump up in their pay packet?
